“How many solar panels do I actually need?”
The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It depends on your electricity usage, location, panel wattage, and system efficiency. But the good news is, you can estimate it using a few simple formulas.
Step 1: Understand Your Energy Usage (kWh)
Let’s say :
- Monthly usage = 600 kWh
- Daily usage = 600 ÷ 30 = 20 kWh/day
Step 2: Estimate Sun Hours (Peak Sun Hours)
In Malaysia, average PSH ≈
3 to 4 hours/day
We’ll use :
- PSH = 3.5 hours/day
Step 3: Calculate Required Solar System Size (kW)
Formula :So you need roughly a 5.71 kW solar system
Step 4: Convert System Size into Number of Panels
Now we calculate how many panels you need.Generally, solar panels that we used are : 640W - 710W = 0.64 kW - per panel
Formula :
Example :
= 20 kWh/(2.24W)
= 8.9 unit solar panel
